Morning Sickness Herbal Remedy
Nausea and sometimes vomiting during pregnancy is usually referred to morning sickness. These problems often interfere with activities of pregnant women. Many ways done to alleviate this disorder. One of them with herbal therapy using ginger (Zingiber officinale).
According to a review published by the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, ginger can be used by pregnant women to treat morning sickness sustained without causing harmful side effect to the fetus.
From six studies that tested the effects of ginger to reduce nausea and vomiting in pregnant women, found that ginger works better than placebo (inactive drug) such as vitamin B6, which so far has shown its function to reduce nausea and vomiting in some pregnant women.
Pregnant women who consume ginger are not impaired in pregnancy, as reported by researchers in the journal.
Although ginger may be used to reduce the urge to vomit and nausea, but these data are still preliminary and further research is needed to ensure that the ginger really safe for pregnant women consumed.
In a study involving 246 women, ginger always outperformed placebo in overcoming nausea and vomiting. Even in women who experience severe morning sickness called hyperremesis gravidarum, this herb is proven effective.
In a recent study, randomly, the participants are given a capsule containing 350 mg of ginger and the other was given 25 mg of vitamin B6 three times a day for three weeks. Results showed that ginger was as effective as vitamin B6 in overcoming nausea and vomiting. Symptoms of morning sickness can be overcome in more than half of women in each group studied.
Several studies have reported side effects such as headaches, diarrhea and drowsiness. But there were no differences regarding pregnancy outcomes between women who consumed a placebo, vitamin B6 or ginger (Zingiber officinale).
